Sail for Hope
Sail for Hope 2011: We did it!
Although the weather was not exactly what we would have liked, we can again declare this event as a very successful occasion. Once again I would like to thank all yacht club members for their continued support and participation in this event. Thank you to all who volunteered their time and boats to host our Sail For Hope guests. By all accounts our vistors had a wonderful day. Although we didn’t get out on the water we did what all boaters do when the conditions aren’t conducive to safe passage; we hung out on the dock, enjoyed our boats and the company of others. The numbers are also something we can be proud of. At this point the total amount raised for our local Cancer Society office is $15,346.40 with a promise of another couple of hundred dollars to come in. We estimate we have just topped the $100,000 cumulative total since the inception of this event.
Every year the Bluewater Division of the Canadian Cancer Society supports about 130 volunteer drivers who in turn make over 6000 trips to cancer related appointments. That’s approximately 850,000kms travelled by the volunteers. In 2010 we supported 21 families being treated for cancer at various hospitals in Southern Ontario. Today, due in no small part to all our efforts, 62% of people diagnosed with cancer will survive their ordeal compared to 33% in the 1960’s. Clearly there has been great progress made and a long way to go. That’s why we call it “Sail for Hope”. By hosting events like this we keep the hope alive.
I would like to thank also those skippers who volunteered their boats but weren’t needed for the day. We give dated commemorative burgees to all skippers who participate on the day and would like all skippers who volunteered but weren’t actively entertaining guests to be able to fly the 2011 burgee. Your commitment to the event is truly appreciated. Wendy Hately will be handing you the burgee in due course.
I would like to thank everyone for your support of this event. Thank you to all TYC members who volunteer their time to sit on the organizing committee. We also owe a big thank you to all the CCS volunteers who sit on the SFH committee and to those who magically turn up on the day to help the event run so smoothly. We do need the continuing participation of TYC members on the committee so please, if you would like to help in organizing next year’s event, let us know because we need your help.
Thankyou
